Workforce Pell in Michigan
Workforce Pell lets federal Pell Grants pay for short job training programs, not just college degrees, starting July 2026. In Michigan, eligible programs run 8 to 14 weeks and must be approved by the state first, so ask the training provider whether a specific program qualifies.

Who qualifies for Workforce Pell?
Students who qualify for a Pell Grant based on the FAFSA. Unlike regular Pell, you can use Workforce Pell even if you already have a bachelor's degree. People with a graduate degree can't.
How do you find an approved program?
- File the FAFSA.
- Look for short programs on Michigan Training Connect or at your community college.
- Ask the provider directly: "Is this program approved for Workforce Pell?"
Other ways to pay for short training: Michigan Works! if you qualify, the Achievement Skills Scholarship ($2,000 a year) for recent graduates, and Michigan Reconnect for community college certificates.
For training providers
Michigan's first approval window closed June 15, 2026. The next window runs Jan. 15 to Feb. 12, 2027, with decisions by April 1, 2027. Programs must be listed on Michigan Training Connect. Questions go to mileap-wfpell@michigan.gov.
